Medical Academy

A new partnership between LSA’s Medical Academy and HCA Healthcare (Clear Lake) provides students with a one-of-a-kind combination of advanced academic courses, hands-on learning activities, unique experiences and up-close mentorship from healthcare professionals in the field. A student’s graduation from the Medical Academy arms them with the knowledge, passion, and resume to propel them into pre-medicine or pre-nursing majors in our nation’s finest colleges and universities. Early and extensive exposure to the wide range of professional careers in medicine provides clarity to interested students as they make decisions about their future.

The course work and experiences within the Medical Academy requires students to demonstrate the highest ethical standards, maturity, and academic achievement. Selection and continued participation in the Medical Academy are determined on achievement, behavior, and character.

REQUIRED COURSES

Students must complete LSA’s normal graduation requirements with a 3.75 GPA or better and earn an A or B in the following courses:

Honors Anatomy & Physiology
Honors Medical Genetics
AP Biology or AP Chemistry

COLLABORATIVE EXPERIENCE

Students must participate in a collaborative experience linked to the Honors Medical Genetics course. This experience may require travel and expense, but most of the time will be spent in class.

INTERNSHIP

Medical Academy graduates must also complete a 90-hour externship with a healthcare professional. This externship will likely occur the summer following a student’s junior
year, although other scenarios can occur.

RECOGNITION

Students who successfully complete the Medical Academy will be recognized with an distinguished endorsement at graduation and will have a special notation added to their transcripts and diploma.

LSA’s partnership with HCA Clear Lake launches a host of exciting learning, training, and internship opportunities for our students.
