Arts
Where Creative Vision Comes to Life!
The Fine Arts Department at LSA believes that the fine arts are essential to a well-rounded education. Academic research has consistently shown the positive correlation between participation in the fine arts and a student’s ability to succeed academically and socially. Because of this, the fine arts are incorporated across all grade levels within the curriculum. Through the Fine Arts program, students are provided the opportunity to explore and excel in their God-given abilities in the performing, visual, and theatrical arts. Students will learn that the arts are integral parts of God’s creation and that they speak to every individual in a unique and beautiful way.
Visual Arts
Lutheran South Academy offers an art program unlike any other.
Our art and ceramic classes are taught by professional artists who may own a business, display their work publicly, or have work mass distributed nationally and internationally. This experience allows our art teachers to provide LSA students with the best instruction possible for techniques and real world application.
We are proud to have students excel in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Competition with several advancing through the competition each year since 2018. In 2022 three students advanced to the Auction Division of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, an honor shared by only 75 students out of several thousand entries from both public and private schools.
Art students at LSA are also encouraged to participate in community outreach. Each year, there are several class periods dedicated to making hand-made holiday cards which we then distribute to senior citizens in assisted living communities.
We strive for excellence in every aspect of our art program! Be on the lookout for displays of student work throughout the year as they develop their artistic skills and techniques.
Middle School
In Middle School, the Lutheran South Academy visual arts program offers a unique experience for students to explore and expand their creativity. Middle school art is split up into four classes: General Art for Grade 6, General Art for Grades 7-8, Art with Enrichment for Grade 6, and Art with Enrichment for Grades 7-8.
General art classes meet twice a week and Art with Enrichment meets three times a week. On Enrichment Fridays, students learn about a new artist through activities and projects. Through this creative introduction, students begin to develop an understanding and appreciation for the arts.
High School
Our High School art program offers a wide range of different classes for students of all levels.
High school art classes include Art 1, Art 2, Art Portfolio, Ceramics 1, and Ceramics 2. All art students are encouraged to start with Art 1, a yearlong introductory course that includes many 2-dimensional forms, as well as 3-dimensional forms. Art 2 is a higher level course with an emphasis on drawing and painting. Art Portfolio for advanced Juniors and Seniors, is a course where students work towards and complete their senior portfolio. Students work independently and at their own pace.
Students are encouraged to express their creativity and personal journey through the art process. Above all, they are given the opportunity to glorify God through the artistic process.
It is our goal to give students not only techniques to create, but also to use their artwork and share it with the community.
Choral Music
The music department at Lutheran South Academy is committed to helping its students discover this treasure. First, to give them a means glorify and honor God and secondly, to enable them to explore and enjoy the beauty of music.
The choral program at LSA is designed to provide students with a thorough, age-appropriate, vocal music experience through a sequence of instruction in proper vocal technique and musicianship.
Students will learn the proper methods of vocal tone production and diction; will learn the fundamentals of ensemble singing including balance, blend, and intonation; will develop their skills in sight-reading and rhythmic accuracy; and will learn to sing together expressively.
Throughout the school year, students will experience a wide range of musical styles and will perform in a wide range of venues.
Lower School General Music
Our lower school music program is about exposing our students to music through a variety of mediums. In PreK and Kindergarten, students are taught childhood songs, popular Christian contemporary music, and have the opportunity to participate in two music programs, one at Christmas and the other in the Spring. Our students in grades 1-4 are introduced to the foundations of music through singing and other general music techniques as they work to improve their musical literacy and performance capabilities. They also have the opportunity to participate in two music programs, one at Christmas and the other in the Spring.
Middle School Choir
Choir is an elective class starting in grade 5 and is available to all students in grades 5-8 who have an interest in singing. Membership in the middle school choir is fun and it serves as a great foundation builder for future choral activities. The LSA Middle School Choir performs at the Christmas Concert in December and in the Spring Concert at the end of the school year.
High School Concert Choir
Concert Choir is a fine art elective for high school students. It is open to all students; however, membership in smaller ensembles within the choir is an opportunity provided by audition only. The LSA High School Concert Choir performs at the Christmas Concert and in the Spring Concert at the end of the school year. In addition, the choir also performs at various church and community venues throughout the year. The High School Choir also participates in the TAPPS vocal music competition, which gives students the opportunity to perform as a choir, in small ensembles, and as solo performers.
The members of the Concert Choir at Lutheran South Academy live out Psalm 135:3 which says: "Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; celebrate His lovely name with music."

Grade 4 Recorders
Students at Lutheran South Academy are introduced to instrumental music beginning in grade 4 through the use of recorders. Students in recorder class meet twice a week for 30 minutes each class. Students are guided through a curriculum called “Recorder Karate” in which colored belts are earned as students achieve performance benchmarks on their recorder. The students are then showcased at the end of the year at the annual Lower School Music Showcase in the spring.
Grade 5 Band
In grade 5, students are provided the elective opportunity to learn a formal concert band instrument. This instruction focuses on all aspects of proper instrumental performance including, but not limited to, basic theory, proper posture and breathing techniques, instrument specific performance techniques, embouchure formation, intonation, rhythmic accuracy, and instrument care. Students are showcased at the annual Lower School Music Showcase in the spring as well as taken to Schlitterbahn Waterpark for a public performance. This band meets five times every two weeks for a period of 45 minutes each class.
Middle School Bands
Formal bands are formed in grade (beginning band) and grades 7-8 (Concert Band). The instruction in these groups focuses on advancing the knowledge and ability of students on their individual instruments. The opportunity to perform and excel is provided through concerts (Christmas and Spring), region band auditions, and the Texas Private School Music Educators Association (TPSMEA) solo and ensemble competition. The Middle School Bands also participate in the Houston Symphonic Band Concert and Sight-reading contest.
High School Band
The Lutheran South Academy Symphonic Band showcases the best instrumentalists Lutheran South has to offer. This performing group consistently places high in TAPPS Solo/Ensemble and Concert and Sightreading competitions, including their 2016, 2017, 2018 TAPPS 4A State Championship. Students are not required to audition for this group, however for new members to the group, a consultation with the directors is required.
Performance opportunities within this group include solos, small ensembles, Drumline, and Jazz Ensemble. The band regularly performs at home football games, pep rallies, and takes an out-of-state performance tour every other year. Symphonic Band students interested in composing also have the opportunity for guided study with the Lutheran South Band staff. The Symphonic Band meets daily for 45 minutes each class meeting.
Drama/Theatre
If you love the stage, LSA has a place for you! The Drama/Theater department offers many ways for students to express their creativity whether in the spotlight or behind the scenes.
Lutheran South Academy's drama program focuses on Musical Theater, Modern Drama, and Drama for Worship. We have two annual productions: a fall drama in the style of a "Black Box" theatre, and the Spring Musical. Past productions include....
If your passion takes you behind the scenes, a vast array of technical theater work is available. In addition to drama classes, the curriculum also offers experience in technical theater, set design and building, sound and lighting engineering, and costuming.
